The Average Source Count Across Query Types and Industries
A standard AI Overview links to 5 to 8 relevant websites on average, according to Single Grain’s 2025 analysis. AI Mode responses run longer – approximately 300 words versus the typical 50-word AI Overview – and pull from roughly 7 unique domains, appearing in 92% of AI Mode results in sidebar format.
At scale, the picture looks different. Surfer SEO’s analysis of 36 million AI Overviews and 46 million citations produces a ratio of approximately 1.28 citations per AI Overview on average. The gap between this number and the 5 to 8 figure is explained by the large proportion of AI Overviews that cite zero external sources – they synthesize from Google’s own properties or produce self-contained answers with no outbound links. Among Overviews that do cite external sources, individual queries routinely receive 3 to 8 citations.
The cross-platform comparison sharpens this: Perplexity averages 257-word responses with a 25.11% URL duplication rate – the lowest of any platform, meaning it draws from the most diverse source set. Google AI Overviews average 191 words and show higher self-referential citation rates. If only one or two sites cover a topic, AI Overviews rarely appear – multiple reputable sources must converge on the same answer before Google generates a synthesis. Niche queries with thin source consensus stay in traditional SERP format. This is a hidden entry barrier for specialized topics: you need competitors covering the same ground before your ground becomes citation-worthy.
Self-referential citations are the third hidden variable. 43% of AI Overview citations in SE Ranking’s analysis link to Google’s own properties – other Google search results, YouTube, Google News. This is a significant hidden share that reduces available citation slots for external sources. A query producing 6 citations may have 2.5 of those going to Google properties, leaving 3.5 slots for the open web.
How Your Citation Chances Change Based on Competitive Source Density

This contradicts the assumption that ranking in the top 10 automatically provides citation protection. Organic position is a weak predictor of citation; content structure and fan-out query alignment are stronger predictors.
The actionable calculation: identify the 10 to 15 queries most central to your content cluster. Run each query and count actual citations. Identify what percentage of those citations come from domains you could realistically match on content structure, entity density, and credential signals. Queries where 3 or more of 5 to 6 citations go to sources you can match on all three dimensions represent your highest-probability targets.
Boundary condition: Source count data reflects analyses from March through November 2025. Citation slot counts and platform behaviors are actively changing as Google expands AI Mode coverage and adjusts AI Overview trigger rates across intent categories. Self-referential citation share in particular may shift as Google adjusts its own-property weighting. Verify current per-category averages before using as optimization targets.
